Speed Racer Video Mosaic

You may have seen my previous Ramdaq Mosaic post... but it probably didn't give you a proper feel for how obsessed I've become by mosaics in the last few days. The good news is that I've sold a couple of photo shoots so its possible to claim this is a productive use of time. The bad news is that most of my recent CPU cycles are being spent on video mosaics.

The idea is simple, instead of making a single mosaic image you make lots of them... and then string them together to make a video.

My first effort is a little rough around the edges, but visually highly compelling. I decided to use the film Speed Racer because it is rough in places (plot, script, etc.) but massively compelling in terms of visual style. I loved it.

Step 1 was to extract several thousand still frames from the original movie. Easily done if you have a copy and know how to use mplayer's video filters.

Step 2 was to take the Speed Racer trailer and extract the individual frames and soundtrack. Again, easily done with mplayer.

Step 3 is as simple as doing some magic foo with your mosaic tools so you end up with mosaic versions of each trailer frames, using the original movie frames as tiles. Easy but slow.

Step 4 is to put the mosaic'd trailer frames back with the soundtrack and encode it all with mencoder. Doodle.

Compressing video is a nightmare. You need to know what you're doing to get half decent results. Compressing video that has lots of lots of fine detail that changes from frame to frame is a double nightmare. Even if you know what you're doing it is hard to get a good size to quality trade-off. So I didn't really bother to try too hard, its just a big x264 file with an MP3 wrapped up in an AVI. It should play on sensible player, but is obscenely huge at 120MB for 2 minutes! ;)

If you're crazy enough - download it now. (Link to torrent file)

Or, for slightly more sane people... there is a streaming version below. The problem is that you can't really see the detail any more which is half the point. Humm. You need a newish version of flash for this to work.

The first 10 seconds or so are basically static screens, very dull. Maybe I should have edited it. With the buffering and the 10 seconds of dull start only the truly dedicated will get to the meat of the action!
